Culture and psychotherapy : review and practical guidelines Tseng, Wen-Shing
Transcultural psychiatry 36(2), 131-179, 1999 Abstract In this overview, the subject of culture and psychotherapy is considered broadly from five perspectives: (i) culture-embedded indigenous healing practices, (ii) culture-influenced 'unique' psychotherapies, (iii) cultural elements in 'mainstream' therapies, (iv) the practice of psychotherapy in different societies, and (v) intercultural psychotherapy. Various modes of therapy are compared with respect to their basic orientations, techniques and mechanisms of therapy. Culture-relevant psychotherapy requires technical adjustment, theoretical modifications and philosophical reconsideration. Practical suggestions are made regarding areas that need attention in order to conduct culturally appropriate psychotherapy.
Gender-specific treatment Kastrup, Marianne; Arcel, Libby Tata
I : Broken spirits : the treatment of traumatized asylum seekers, refugees, war and torture victims
Wilson, John P.; Drozdek, Boris (red)
Brunner-Routledge, 2004, pp. 547-771 Fra artiklen
This chapter provides an overview of the gender aspects related to the mental health problems of refugees and asylum seekers.
The particularities of gender in relation to symptomatology, need for treatment, and response to treatment will all be seen from a rights perspective. This approach is chosen as it is our experience working with this population both in country of origin and in exile that: (a) too little attention has been paid to the close connection between the human rights perspective and gender and (b) this tends to get lost in the discus- sion of treatment modeis. Special attention will be paid to clinical experiences with this population with the hope of being of use for therapists of both sexes in their daily clinical practice.
Psychotherapy and the cultural concept of the person
Kirmayer, Laurence J.
Transcultural psychiatry 44(2), 232-257, 2007
Abstract
Psychotherapies are distinguished from other forms of symbolic healing by their emphasis on explicit talk about the self. Every system of psychotherapy thus depends on implicit models of the self, which in turn, are based on cultural concepts of the person. The cultural concept of the person that underwrites most forms of psychotherapy is based on Euro-American values of individualism. This individualistic and egocentric concept of the person can be contrasted with more sociocentric, ecocentric or cosmocentric views, which understand the person in relation to the social world, the environment, and the cosmos. Intercultural psychotherapy must consider the cultural concept of the person implicit in therapeutic discourse and practice to determine how well it fits or conflicts with the concepts, values and way of life of the patient.
Nordisk psykologi 54(1), 27-44, 2002 Abstract
The therapeutic alliance is often described as a sine qua non in psychotherapy, as this has been developed within our western tradition. What it actually consists of, how it is established and what function it has, is nevertheless an issue of discussion and research. In the present article the concept of therapeutic alliance is explored in relation to its history, and to some of the ways in which the concept is studied today within psychotherapy research. The challenge of estab- lishing therapeutic alliances in which the parties represent very different cultural traditions is touched upon. When the clients in addition have been exposed to severe human rights viola- tions, and are traumatized by violence and present exile, a special focus on the alliance will be required. Some general reflections as well as some empirically based experiences with the establishing of alliance in a cross cultural and human rights context will be presented.

Refugee families in therapy: from referrals to therapeutic conversations Sveaass; Nora; Reichelt, Sissel
Journal of family therapy 23(2), 119-135, 2004 Abstract Refugee families referred for therapy present a wide array of problems and expectations, not always in accordance with what therapy may offer. Major differences between referring professionals, families and therapists regarding problem definitions and solutions may complicate collaboration. Interventions that may overcome these barriers and move initial interviews into a therapeutic context are described. Three patterns regarding referral process, problem presentation and expectations (here called referral contexts) are outlined: 'the relational', where families ask for psychological and interpersonal assistance, 'the unfocused', where families are referred to therapy without expressing any wish for it, and 'the fixed solution', where families seek support for solutions that are not of a therapeutic nature. The interventions described form part of a negotiation where motives and interest for therapy are explored and agreements regarding further therapy are outlined.
